A Story about Yellowfang and Autumn Feather

"You take the right side of the herd, I will take the left and then we attack the weak one of both sides. Then we will try to kill it swiftly so it doesn't suffer." AutumnFeather barked. He nodded in the direction that she should go and then he moved off to his side and waited for her to get ready before he let out a faint howl and began to charge at the weakest deer. It was a doe who was limping slightly as she walked around she heard the howl and began to panic. Autumn Feather stalked forwards before he leaped. Okay Yellowfang, go and help take her down! AutumnFeather thought as he clamped down on the throat of the deer trying to kill it quickly but he wasn't strong enough to kill her on his own. His claws scrabbled through the skin on her back and neck as he tried to kill the doe, not realizing he was causing more damage than necessarily.

He knew it was wrong for him to hunt and kill. But somewhere deep inside himself he felt more attune with his wolf self. He felt proud that he was actually hunting but there was his healer's side that was screaming at him to not do what he was doing. Why?! He yelled back to himself. I have to feed myself and Yellowfang. Berries and grass won't sustain us for two long. And what would we do if we don't find any? He almost howl out loud. But he just clamped his jaws tighter to prevent himself for actually screaming. He tried to drown out the bellows that the doe was yowling near his ear as it kicked frantically trying to throw off her attacker, but it wasn't really working. Please Gods help me make this kill! He prayed to himself hoping they would help them make it through this hunt.

Listening carefully to his plan off attack. Yellowfang nodded in understanding, without replying back. She moved slowly into position. Okay, come on girl, you can do this. she thought and whispered very softly to herself. She had to talk some courage into her. Her breathing went faster, getting nervous, but the important thing is, could she get moving on the command?

(insert commercial of 8 minutes. lol)

Her ears perked up on the faint howl and saw that the poor doe was starting to panic. Yellowfang instead froze on the spot, unable to move. Even if she wanted, her muscles didn’t comply. The poor healeress couldn’t do anything, then to watch how Autumn Feather attacked and struggled with the doe. Seeing him loosing grip, she knew that she had to do something, he was depending on her, only her muscles not. Suddenly she felt a sharp sting in her behind and leaped forward with a yelp. Charging the doe, jumping to the deer with open yaw to grab on her throat too, while her claws where scratching the skin for grip.

This time the doe couldn’t hold the weight of two wolves and fell to the ground, and that was it for her… It sounds maybe sad or cruel, but so is life.

“Sorry for being late….” Yellowfang spoke softly, apologizing to not have come forward when it was being signaled and looking to the kill, rather than to her partner. As she had almost let him down.

AutumnFeather smiled gently to her. He knew it was hard for him too and it had to be harder for her to take a life than him. "You were right on time. It was me too; I almost let the doe go but think of it this way. She was going to die soon anyways from her disease we just helped her move on." He barked softly, resting his head on her muzzle for a moment. He stared down at her before looking away to where the deer now laid. He hunched over the fallen animal and began to eat at the choice parts. "I can't eat this all on my own you know." He barked teasingly at her, his lips a little red from the meat he had just eaten.

The gray-white wolf looked up to the tri-colored wolf, on the comment of that she was on time Huh? I was? The comfort he gave to her was reassuring, even in his words. A few tears came from her eyes and onto her cheeks, as she looked up to him. “I-I suppose you are right...” Yellowfang barked in reply “That we just ended her suffering.”
Looking back down to lifeless body of the doe, tail hanging low and ears too. She closed her eyes for a moment to say a silent prayer for what they have done. .Oh please Lord, forgive us for what we have done, for we had no choice at all. in the hope to be forgiven, while her friend started to eat. Then her left ear and feather suddenly twitched as he teased her with his words over the food.
Just then as she wanted to eat too, she opened her eyes in shock as she suddenly realized what they have done! “We, we have broken our oath!!” she yipped out in shock, trembling on her legs and ears perked up. Followed by a thunderclap. Yellowfang got unsure of what would happen to them.

Spoiler:

There were very dark skies in the direction of mountain and it was slowly crawling towards them. Guessing on the wind, the wolves should have maybe a half hour till it comes to them, but really predicting it, is unsure as it is hard to tell for how the wind above that is moving.

Another thing to note is that that sting Yellowfang felt I her behind was no more than that Tweetster poked her with her beak to get moving or she would have laid in the grass all day till either the prey broke free or Autumn Feather gave up.

AutumnFeather's ear twitch as he heard her say they had broken their Oath. She's right we have broken our Oath! And I know there well be a price to pay for breaking the rules, I just hope they forgive us after what we have done. The tri-colored wolf thought, not really wanting to voice his thoughts he looked at the prey that was waiting to be eaten.

"Come on we had better eat as much as we can and try to find shelter before the storm comes. I don't know about you but I would not like to be trapped here out in the rain with no trees to lighten the rain." He barked with a light smile.

Autmn Feather’s bark brought her back to snap out of the shock. Still a bit shacking, Yellowfang walked to the other side of the doe and start to eat, so that she can look up to her friend. “Hmm… this tastes even better, then when the hunters brought it back.” She barked between the bites. Her lips getting red from the blood. Only her healers mind was objecting her comment Now come on, yellowfang. Don’t get too used of it.
Her tail flicked left and right from happiness, as she started to actually enjoy really fresh meat, then one that is all a few hours old when it was her turn to eat. For all that she could pick out any part she wanted, then only a piece of leg, or rib.

“Oh yeah, that is right. It can be very dangerous when lightning strikes. Let’s take a piece with us when we are full.”

"That's a smart idea." AutumnFeather said between bites as he gorged on the meat, not really knowing when his next meal would arrive. He kept his ears pricked, listening for the wind of the storm.

“Thank you, dear.” Yellowfang replied in kindness between her bites. Chewing firmly on a harder part. Huh? Did I just said dear to him? Where did that came from? The wolfess had no idea that she was starting to show her feelings towards Autumn Feather.

Another thunderclap arrived, this time a bit closer than the last one. The clouds were also moving in closer.

Yellowfang looked up on the clap, to see in the sky a lighting show “Look at that Autumn Feather.” She yipped as she swallowed the part where she was chewing on. “It’s beautiful.” After it disappeared she dove back into the side of the deer, touching by accident her mate’s nose as she was looking for a juicy part to eat. Which made her giggle.

AutumnFeather dropped the bone he had been chewing on when he heard her. Did she just me dear? He thought before he went back to the bone. He, then, looked up at the sky "You are right it is beautiful." AutumnFeather barked absentmindedly as he thought about the feelings that he felt as he looked at Yellowfang as she ate. He finished eating and stood up grabbing a large chunk of meat and a bone he got ready to leave.
"Are you ready to leave?" AutumnFeather asked his ears tucked back as he heard the distant clap of thunder.

“Almost” Yellowfang said muffled as she was looking for the part she wanted to take. “Ah ha. Bingo!” As she found the piece and started to yank on it. Stopping for second and ears perking up from the clap. Then back to the yanking with growling “Come on…. You piece.. of…” With two more yanks it gave away “Finally..” She said with the meat and bone piece clinched between her teeth. “Lead the way!” while looking proud with the juicy meat rib.

As both wolves set off to the forest, which is located on the other end of the valley. The sky lightened up once again. Yellowfang looked at it, then back to what is in front of her. Now it was time run for cover, not watching a lightning show! How beautiful it may look. At the far end of dark clouds it began to rain. Shall the two wolves make it in time to get a shelter in the dry or will they get wet?

AutumnFeather had waited for her to yank free the meat and bone before he charged off in the direction of the trees. Thunder rolled in the distance as they neared the trees he kept going even after the first few trees flew past him, he knew better shelter was found deeper into the forest than at the edge. He only stopped when he started to feel tired.
"We can stay here until the storm finishes." AutumnFeather panted as he came to a halt and looked at Yellowfang. He sat down for a moment trying to catch his breath as he dropped the meat and bone at his feet.

With a full belly and carrying the bone meat, made Yellowfang’s running pace slower than normal. She could barely keep up with Autumn Feather and couldn’t make sound to let him know to slow down a bit. At least if she lost sight of him, she could track Autumn Feather’s scent. The thunder was getting closer, by the sound and so was the smell on rain.
Arriving at the forest line, she was getting tired, but didn’t want to stop, pushing on to the limits of what her body can handle. Feeling that she reached her limit she slowed down to walk the last part. Tongue hanging out to the right side, panting heavily she looked and sniffed around to find her friend. Finding him.

Dropping her piece to the ground, she licked her own mouth, looking around on what he said for being safe from the storm. “Yesss.” She replied with a pant, laying down to rest on her side. “Only I’m afraid that we aint gonna keep it dry. How can it, that you are still fast on a full stomach? I can hardly keep up.” As she was wondering it, was it from her gender? Or something else? Hoping that he could give the answer to that.

Looking up to the flashing sky, it seemed that the ThunderGods where fighting an endless battle. She could watch it endlessly. Remembering an evening where it was very busy in the sky and she couldn’t sleep. She got out of her den, to find a safe spot to watch the show. It seemed that she was the only wolf who liked it. Even when one of the flashes came hurling down to the ground. To light up only a portion of the area in the darkness, she didn’t flinched. It didn’t even matter if it rained or not, as she knew that she had a dry bed to crawl back into if she was too tired to stay awake.

Back to the present. She looked behind her to see that the rain was coming in. Realizing that they don’t have now that luxury of a dry bed to crawl into, she was willing to look for one.
Titling up her head, looking at her friend “Autumn Feather? What do you think of… that we should look for a nice shelter for the night?” Yellowfang barked kindly, on a different tone and sweeter then usually as she spoke to him.

AutumnFeather had finally caught his breath back and knew she was right. "Yes we should find a more sheltered spot." AutumnFeather barked looking at Yellowfang. He picked up his prey and then stood up and looked for a tree to use as shelter.
"Come on, Yellowfang." He barked through a mouth full of meat and bone.

Glad that he agreed to her idea. She slowly got up with a smile, still panting, but happy to have had that rest stop. Yellowfang grabbed her prey part than replied back with a mouthful “Coming!” and start to follow again. This time taking also the time to look around what can be used as a good shelter for two wolves.

Both of them where just underway when a very loud crash of thunder was heard. Shelter, shelter where are you? The female wolf thought as she was looking for it.

AutumnFeather's ears snapped backwards as the thunder crashed above him. Finally he found an old tree that had half of the roots sticking out of the ground forming a small cave like den.
"Hey lets shelter there." AutumnFeather barked as he motioned towards the the roots of the tree. He placed his prey at the entrance and dug out some more dirt until there was enough room for both of them. "You can go first I will follow you." He said as he picked back up his food.

Not finding a shelter she found nice enough, with a bit room to spare. Her ears perked up when her mate found one and pointed out the direction of it. ”Ok.” She replied even that it looks a bit cramped for two wolves to fit in. But there was no other option, and headed over, while Autumn Feather made it a bit bigger. Yellowfang nodded, thinking by herself What does he have such manners, to let ladies go in first. I haven’t met many of those.. Lowered herself down and entered the small cave den, swatting her friend with her tail by accident on his muzzle “Thank you.”
Inside she dug a small hole for the meat-bone, placed it in there, waiting for her colleague to enter it too, shifting her body in the process to make it comfortable for both of them.

On the moment Autumn Feather enters the makeshift cave / den. It started to poor heavily from the rain, accompanied by a bright flash of light followed by the crashing sound of thunder. As the thunderstorm is now over their heads.

“It seems we made it just in time.” Yellowfang barked, followed by a big yawn. She was tired from today’s activities and looked for a last time to the tr-colored wolf. “I don’t know about you, but I am going to get some sleep. Good night, dear Autumn Feather. Sleep well and sweet dreams for later. See ya tomorrow.” Placed her head between her front paws, ears folded back and closed her eyes.
Huh? Why did I say again ‘dear’ to Autumn Freather? What’s wrong with me? With that in her mind, playing over and over, she fell finally asleep.

As she slept and entered dreamland she relived the happiest moments of this day. That There was someone to comfort her, having fun and enjoyable race. Even that of the crash and her skidding over the grass. Then there was the hunt. Unknowingly to her at this time, was that her heart was starting to grow feelings for his friend. While she slept she started to snuggle against Autumn Feather, enjoying his body heat they both shared.

AutumnFeather smiled at Yellowfang as she slept. He wanted to stay up for a bit longer as he too thought about how the day had progressed from being healers at the pack they had both grown up in to breaking the rules as they hunted to becoming more and more close friends as the first day had progressed. I wonder what tomorrow will bring. He thought before he laid his head on his paws and drifted off to sleep.

((I think that we can skip to the next hunt, as t hey have food with them for now. As it is getting up, making ready for travel distance and at the and of the day finding a testing place.

Don't know if you want to play the wake up scene and then when they are on the move doing a time skip ahead to the 2nd hunt. It is after all their first night together.))

Back to the story:
A few weeks past and the couple where getting closer to the halfway marker point of the mountain. Their hunting skills improved little by little. Still taking the same tactic to hunt for their meal. Taking out the old or sick ones. And when they got lost, they found something that brought them back on track.


Just before morning light, Yellowfang woke up, as she opened her eyes she found herself in a bit of awkward position. Her muzzle was not laying anyone between her paws, but rather on that of her partner, who was still asleep. Slowly she crawled out of another makeshift den, to not to awake Autumn Feather.

The skies were still a bit dark, but not for long as some sun rays where peeking through them. Yellowfang inhaled the fresh air morning air. Then stretched her front legs, followed by the rear and as last she shook her fur looser. She looked back, to the still sleeping wolf, which she grow to love. With that thought, she looked around, to see the new surroundings. Then started her morning stroll as always, to wake up her stiff muscles.

She found a river, not too far away from where they are staying. Quenching her thirst there, Yellowfang thought back to the first day that she woke up next to Autumn Feather. A wolf, to who she has now grown closer to then before. That was also the first time she felt, or was it a few more? Anyway, it was the first time for her, as a healer, to have no responsibilities at all! No need to take care of any injured wolf, or needing to look over a couple of pups as their parents went on hunting or patrol, or whatever their task is. This made her smile and drank some more water. To be free, to do what you like and say, without being punished or hold back from. Even those hunts where getting fun. Only her healer side was disagreeing in that. Which made her feel that she is being trapped between two sides. Yellowfang!!!, You are a healer for sake! Not a killer! What you have done is wrong. Admit it girl!

Looking into the river. She saw her reflection. A wolf with a black feather behind her left ear, only was that feather starting to fade away and not a solid one, as she had seen in her younger days. “Yes, I.. I was wrong. But I had no choice. If we didn’t hunt, we would starve… and die! We have only done it out of necessity! Not that we like it! Besides, we picked out the ones that wouldn’t survive!” She barked with anger her reflection, followed by a paw slash through the water. Angry at the wolf in her, standing up to defend what she and her dear friend have done, in order to stay alive.

With that over, and the sun raising further, she trot back to the camp, finding her love still in dreamland. Yellowfang lowered herself and gave him a nuzzle with her snout. “Wakey, wakey love. Time to get up.” She whispered tenderly into his ear right ear. Followed by a lick on his cheek. Waiting for him to open his eyes. Acting like that whole conversation with herself never took place.

AutumnFeather could feel the cold nose of Yellowfang as he slept and her voice woke him up. He opened his eyes and looked up at Yellowfang. "Okay. How's the weather?" AutumnFeather grumbled playfully, as he sat up and shook himself. He had been dreaming about the many days that they had been traveling. He knew as the journey proceeded he and Yellowfang we growing more and more in their relationship. I never thought that this would happen. AutumnFeather had thought the night before, but he knew he could not denie that he was falling in love with Yellowfang and he knew that it should not happen, they should be just friends and partners but he could not force back his feeling of love for the grey and white she-wolf.

"What should we do today?" AutumnFeather barked as he looked at Yellowfang.

“Uuhmmm the weather?” Yellowfang replied, thinking back to the last few days, on what the temperature was, the cloud cover. “Well… so far as can tell, it is going to be a bright sunny day with a temperature of 97 degrees F.” It was early summer when they left the pack to follow their totem. Now they are in the middle time frame of it, with warm temperatures and the occasionally evening thunderstorm to let it cool off.
She looked at Autumn Feather and felt an urge inside of her to leap at him playfully, to tackle him, snuggle into his fur. Wait a minute! What am I thinking? I can’t.. I just can’t do that. Not to him, not to a fellow healer! Oh come on… Yellowfang.. you are falling for him, and he is falling for you. Just look into his eyes to see it. Two thoughts, one her own, the other her heart. She couldn’t deny that.

Back in the days at the pack, when her brother became sick, she took a caring role for him. Just like what her mother did. That day, was the day she heard her calling. To become a healer. After the exam and just before she got her totem behind her left ear. She had to pledge the healers oath. On graduation day. After that she received the totem. Further Yellowfang recalls that she was sitting on the front row, when Autumn Feather, at that time an unknown wolf to her. Graduated too in the arts of healing, saying the same vow, only a different totem.

No, no. That can’t be… We both took the pledge. It is not allowed! Oh dear….don’t tell me that you want to die puppy-less. Huh? What? Yellowfang wondered what her other side knew, what she doesn’t. Before she could think more on it. Autumn Feather barked for today’s activities.

Knowing that they both have had traveled long distances in the past few weeks, without any real break. She found that they deserved one. Besides with that river on a mile or two from their den. They could fresh their body’s, souls.

“What about this!” She barked excitingly, wiggling her rear end and set her urge into motion. Leaping playfully at the surprised Autumn Feather, to tackle him, followed by snuggling into her fur and as last biting playfully into his ear.

OOC note, because I have two wolves talking in her thoughts. I am going to make her normal thoughts default color, her other half, orange. To keep them separated. Be aware this is not being spoken, only her thoughts.

AutumnFeather chuckled as he was knocked backwards and landed in a heap of fur. "You know I would love to play but we really should get going." AutumnFeather barked as he rubbed his muzzle on the top of her head.
